Choosing the perfect Christmas tree is a treasured holiday adventure for many Kentuckians. In Lexington and surrounding areas, you'll find farms that grow their own trees and offer them cut or burlapped.

Many businesses have branched out, offering special activities and merchandise including wreaths, garland, salsa and jams.

Get your holidays started with our annual list of area Christmas tree farms, which includes locations, hours and contact info. Farm owners tell us that Herald-Leader readers often arrive to shop for trees with our popular list in hand.

CENTRAL KENTUCKY

Fayette County

Barker's Christmas Tree Farm. 1470 Deer Haven Ln., Lexington. Choose-and-cut Scotch and white pine field trees, $32. Choose-and-cut Canaan and Douglas firs, $9 a foot. Pre-cut Fraser firs 7 to 8 feet, $60. Wreaths, $15-$21. Tree stands, $20. Hours: 3:30-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun. Directions: From Man o' War Boulevard, take Todds Road 1.8 miles out of town, past the Interstate 75 bridge. Turn left on Deer Haven Lane and go about 3/4 mile; farm is on the right. Christmas Memories Tree Farm. 4890 Keene Rd. (Ky. 1267), Lexington. Choose-and-cut white and Scotch pine, Douglas and Canaan fir, $30-$100. Saws, twine and help loading trees provided. Open Dec. 1-16. Hours: 9 a.m.-dark Sat., 2 p.m.-dark Sun. Directions: From Man o' War Boulevard, go 1.7 miles south on Harrodsburg Road. Turn onto Military Road. Bear left on Keene Road (Ky. 1267). Drive 0.4 mile, and trees will be on your left. Contact: (859) 223-1140.

Nieman's Tree Farm. 5100 Sulphur Ln., Lexington. Choose-and-cut Fraser fir and white pine. Balled and burlapped (to plant) Norway spruce, white pine and white fir. Hours: 9 a.m.-dark Nov. 24 and late afternoon until dark weekdays through Dec. 24, or call for an appointment. Directions: From Man o' War Boulevard, take Todds Road 3 miles out of town, turn right on Sulphur Lane. Farm is on the right. Contact: (859) 263-4535, (859) 552-3532.

Clark County

Yuletide Tree Farm and Nursery. 3925 Old Boonesboro Rd., Winchester. Cut white pine and Douglas fir, balled and burlapped white pine and Norway and blue spruce. Pre-cut and you-cut trees, $40; balled and burlapped trees, $36-$72. Wreaths, garland and a gift shop. Hours: 1-5 p.m. Sun.-Fri.; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. Through Dec. 22. Directions: From Lexington, take Interstate 64 to Winchester, Exit 94. Turn right on Bypass Road, then right on Ky. 627 (Boonesboro Road). Go to Old Boonesboro Road. Turn right and go 1.3 miles to farm on right. Contact: (859) 744-9068.

Kovalic's Christmas Tree Farm. 487 Ecton Rd., Winchester. Cut Scotch and white pine, $25 and more. Cut spruce and fir, $40 and more. Balled and burlapped white and red pine; blue, white, and Norway spruce; Douglas and Canaan fir, $15 a foot. Wreaths and roping made on the farm also available. Directions: From Lexington on Interstate 64, take Exit 96, turn right onto Ky. 627. At first stoplight, turn left on Veterans Memorial Parkway (Ky. 1958), go 1 mile to Ky. 1960 or Ecton Road; turn right, go quarter-mile to farm on left. Contact: (859) 744-2930.

Garrard County

Cathole Bend Plantation Christmas Tree Farm. 1243 Cathole Bend Rd., Lancaster. You-cut and balled and burlapped trees available. Norway, blue and white spruce; white pine and Canaan fir. Lots of big trees with prices starting at $15. Hours: 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Fri.-Sun. and Dec. 24. Directions: Take U.S. 27 to Ky. 52 in Lancaster, turn west toward Danville and go 0.8 mile. Turn south on Ky. 1150 (Old Danville Road) and go 2.8 miles to the bridge across Dix River. Don't cross the bridge. Drive straight down Cathole Bend Road; the road ends at the farm. Madison County

Baldwin Farm. 1113 Tates Creek Rd., Richmond. Trees grown on the farm: Norway, blue and white spruce and white pine. Cut your own tree (bow saws provided) or farm will cut it for you. $40 up to 8 feet tall, $10 a foot for each additional foot. Balled and burlapped trees start at $49. Fraser firs from North Carolina are available and priced individually. Other items include wreaths, garland, mistletoe kissing balls, salsa, honey, jams and dog treats. Hours: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Through Dec. 22. Directions: From Main Street (U.S. 25) in Richmond, take Tates Creek Road (Ky. 169) 3.5 miles and look for signs on left. Contact: (859) 582-5785. Baldwinfarmsky.com.

ELSEWHERE

Campbell County: Hilltop Pines. Stonehouse Rd., Camp Springs (about 10 miles southeast of Cincinnati). You-cut trees, $25; live trees start at $35. Saws provided or bring your own. Directions: From Lexington take I-75 North and then I-275 East. Take Exit 77 towards Maysville/Wilder. Go right off the exit onto Ky. 9. Take a right onto Ky. 547 toward Silver Grove. Turn right onto Four Mile Road. Take a right onto Ky. 1997 for about 1 mile, and the tree farm will be on your left. Contact: (513) 673-8415.

Land Between the Lakes: Free Christmas tree permits available at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area beginning Dec. 1 for visitors to cut cedar trees. The permit, valid through Dec. 24, allows a family to cut one cedar at no charge. Permits, maps and cutting guidelines are at the LBL Administrative Office, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CST Mon.-Fri., and at Golden Pond Visitor Center, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. CST Sat., Sun. On Dec. 24, the visitor center will close early. Contact: 1-800-525-7077. Lbl.org.

Letcher County: Highland Winery and Christmas Tree Farm. 193 Seco Dr., Seco. White and Scotch pine. A four-wheeler and saws are available to rent to cut your own trees. The farm is also a bed-and-breakfast. Hours: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Mon.-Sat. Through Dec. 25. Directions: From Whitesburg, take U.S. 119 North 10 miles, turn left on Ky. 805 for 3 miles, and the farm is on the left. Contact: (606) 855-7968, (606) 821-8248.

Washington County: Lily Land. 2373 Lincoln Park Rd., Springfield. Pines, firs and spruce, $5 to $8 a foot. Saws available. On-site indoor heated rest rooms in a remodeled barn overlooking the farm. Hours: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Through Dec. 24. (859) 481-3868, (859) 336-7381.
