A 19-year-old man has been charged by Lexington police after a 2-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the arm Saturday night by his male 4-year-old cousin.

According to Lexington police, Lavonne Myron Smith tried to hide the gun used in the shooting from officers after they arrived on the scene. Smith was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and tampering with evidence and was jailed at the Fayette County Detention Center. The toddler, who has not been identified, was shot about 7:45 p.m. Saturday in an apartment on Devenport Drive where adults were present.

The child's injuries were not considered life threatening, but he was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. Social services workers were called to assist with the children.
