Anna Martin

It's been nearly 11 years to the day since Anna Martin witnessed her first game at Rupp Arena.

Now, as a senior guard for DePaul, the former Lexington Christian standout will be playing in her first game at Rupp on Friday night against No. 7 Kentucky.

"I'm super excited," she said Thursday night. "It's like the Mecca of college basketball to me. It's so exciting, almost like a dream."

Martin, an Honorable Mention All-American, led the Demons with 19.1 points, four rebounds and 3.3 assists last season. She had a career-best 36 points in a win over Cincinnati last season, one of three 30-plus point performances last season.

Her ability to score in a plethora of ways was one of the reasons UK tried to land her, but she opted to go to DePaul instead.

"We have very much respect for her game and her ability," Cats Coach Matthew Mitchell said of Martin, who is averaging 12.1 points and five assists so far this season. "She has had a terrific career and we hope she doesn't play well tomorrow night."

Martin helped lead LCA to three straight All "A" Classic championships and a Sweet Sixteen title in 2007. Martin had 25 points in the final game playing against none other than A'dia Mathies' Iroquois team. Mathies had 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Martin said she wouldn't mind having the kind of individual performance she witnessed at Rupp Arena 11 years ago when Tayshaun Prince hit five straight three-pointers and finished with 31 points in a win over North Carolina. "Now, that would be fun," she said.
