Whether or not it was the kind of seamless competitiveness Coach John Calipari seeks, Kentucky smothered Portland en route to a 74-46 victory Saturday.

The Cats (6-3) took the lead for good before the first television timeout. With Portland making only four of its final 21 shots in the first half, UK led 35-20 at the break.

The second half, which drew Calipari’s ire against Samford on Tuesday, brought Portland little relief.

Scoring from — surprise — Kyle Wiltjer and Ryan Harrow helped Kentucky romp.

Wiltjer, who had made only six of 27 shots in the last three games, hit five of eight in a 12-point afternoon. He seemed to concentrate on drives to the basket and post ups rather than simply launching threes (four of 27 from beyond the arch in the last five games).

Harrow matched his season total of three baskets. He also hit his first three-pointer of the season in scoring eight points.

Alex Poythress and Arcihie Goodwin led UK with 15 points each. Goodwin punctuated his afternoon with two flying dunks in the final two minutes. Julius Mays scored 13.

Portland, which fell to 3-6 (and 0-5 on the road), got 15 points from leading scorer Ryan Nicholas.
