Lex-Care: Disabled nurse needs help to buy medicine

Published: December 12, 2012

Rhonda Barnett, a case manager at UK TAP program, submitted the following case to Lex-Care.

Barnett's client is a divorced woman who needs $745 to pay for car repairs. The woman has a degree in Childhood Development and Education and works full time at UK.

In January 2011 she had surgery. While she was recovering she developed complications that required additional surgeries that delayed her return to work. As a result, she fell behind on her payments. She has returned to work and has managed to pay all of her past-due bills.

Her car now needs new tires and brakes and she needs assistance to pay the bill. Once that is taken care of, she will continue working and hopes to obtain her master's degree.

The second case came from Shannon Gordon, a social worker at the Lexington Senior Center.

She is counseling a single mother of two children, ages 6 and 3, who needs $700 to pay for her medication to treat Crohn's disease. The woman, a former nurse, is disabled and is no longer able to work. Disability benefits are her only source of income.
