Next Cats: Calipari skips Wiggins game to see 2014 targets

Published: December 15, 2012

Andrew Wiggins played at Boyd County Middle School for the second straight night Saturday, but John Calipari was nowhere to be seen.

Instead, the UK coach traveled to Indianapolis to watch 2014 recruits Trey Lyles and Cliff Alexander. Both of those players are top-five prospects in the junior class, and both have UK high on their lists.

Wiggins is the No. 1 senior in the country, and the 6-foot-8 forward from Huntington Prep (W.Va.) was playing his fourth game in Kentucky in the last two weeks. Calipari did not attend any of those games, though assistant coach Orlando Antigua was there Saturday night.

Calipari, Antigua and assistant Kenny Payne watched Wiggins play at Scott County High School last month. Florida State Coach Leonard Hamilton and UNC Coach Roy Williams have both seen Wiggins in recent weeks.

Wiggins and Huntington Prep defeated Arlington Country Day (Fla.) 55-35 on Saturday to improve to 12-0 on the season.

Calipari is expected to be in New Jersey on Sunday to watch Karl Towns, who is UK’s only commitment from the class of 2014.
