Kentucky Senate Democrats keep same leaders

FRANKFORT — Democrats in the Kentucky Senate have re-elected their three leaders for two more years.

In a meeting Monday night in Lexington, Senate Democrats retained R.J. Palmer of Winchester as minority floor leader, Johnny Ray Turner of Prestonsburg as minority caucus chairman and Jerry Rhoads of Madisonville as minority whip.

Sen. Denise Harper Angel, D-Louisville, challenged Turner for caucus chair. The two were tied after the first vote, but Turner won on the second try.

Senate Republicans, who control the chamber by a margin of 23 to 14 with one independent, chose their leaders last month. House Democrats and Republicans are expected to select their leaders when the 2013 General Assembly begins.

State legislators convene at the Capitol Jan. 8 for a 30-day lawmaking session.
