Tidbits: Sip holiday wines and check holiday hours

Most restaurants close their doors around Christmas so the employees can spend time with their families. You might want to phone ahead before heading out to eat during the next couple of weeks. Here are some places that will have different holiday hours.

Hanna's on Lime, 214 South Limestone, will be closed for the holidays beginning Monday and reopening Jan. 14. The special for the first day back will be pot roast. Call (859) 252-6264 or go to Hannasonlime.com.

Casanova Italian Restaurant, 855 South Broadway, will be open on Monday, Christmas Eve, with a special menu that includes Italian wedding soup, tortellini and panettone. Call (859) 309-3313 or go to Casanovaky.com.

■ You might want to pick up your holiday wines at Jean Farris Winery & Bistro on Friday and Saturday. The winery, 6825 Old Richmond Road, will be closed Monday through Wednesday and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Call (859) 402-8617 or go to Jeanfarris.com.

Ramsey's Diners will have special hours Monday, opening at 9 a.m. for breakfast and closing at 4 p.m. Locations are at Ramseysdiners.com.


■ Holiday Blush '12 has arrived at Equus Run Vineyards, 1280 Moores Mill Road in Midway. It features the newest edition of the winery's holiday label of the Kentucky Thoroughbred. The wine is a blend of aromatic whites with a touch of merlot. The tasting room will be open until 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Call (859) 846-9463 or go to Equusrunvineyards.com.

Brown's Bakery, 1226 Versailles Road, is taking orders for holiday goodies until 3 p.m. Saturday. Call ahead for cheesecake and pumpkin, pecan, transparent, bourbon-chocolate-pecan, butterscotch, chocolate, coconut and fruit pies. The bakery will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Christmas Eve. Martine's Pastries, 1039 Industry Road, is making bûche de Noël, or yule log, for holiday parties and dinners. It's $32 and serves 10 to 12. The shop also makes gingerbread men and apple-cinnamon coffee cake.

"These items are special to me because they remind me of my home in France when I would help my mom bake all the holiday pastries from scratch," owner Martine Holzman said.

Martine's is taking orders for all bakery goods until 4 p.m. Saturday, with pickup by noon Monday. Call (859) 231-9110. Martine's is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Special events

■ The South Limestone Association of Merchants will have "Rally Time on Lime" on Saturday. The University of Kentucky men's basketball team plays Marshall University at 4 p.m. at Rupp Arena. Businesses along the street, including The Local Taco and Pazzo's, will have specials. Call Kennedy's Book Store at (859) 252-0331.

Rossi's Restaurant, 1060 Chinoe Road, is serving a brunch buffet Sunday, and while there you can have your Christmas presents wrapped for a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Saul Good Restaurant is selling its chef's blend of herbs and spices for gift giving. Saul Good chefs use the herb blend for the restaurant's French fries, as a barbecue rub, pizza topping and a Bloody Mary glass rimmer.
