At election time, almost everyone agrees it should be easier to vote. Unfortunately, elections pass and people forget and nothing changes.

So, it was heartening to read that Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, the state's leading election official, will hold meetings throughout the state next year to consider ways to improve elections in Kentucky, including instituting early voting and/or no-excuses absentee voting.

The bottom line is that it's much too hard to vote. With elections held mid-week, most voters must juggle work and a myriad of other responsibilities to cast a ballot. In a democracy, it should not be so hard.

That's why the District of Columbia and 32 states now offer some kind of extended voting.

People can vote on weekends or days off, some time when they're not rushing to get kids to school or meet a deadline at work.

Grimes will announce the times and places of the meetings next month, with an aim toward proposing changes before the next round of elections. Good for her.
