One dead, second man seriously injured after Christmas day shooting

One man was killed and another was seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire Tuesday night at a home in the Knott County community of Talcum, Kentucky State Police said.

The initial investigation indicated that two men went to Ricky Sweet's home in the Jamestown Village Trailer Park in Talcum and asked to borrow gas, police said.

After Sweet got some gas from a storage building, one of the men took out a gun and demanded money, police said in a news release.

Sweet and the other man exchanged gunshots, police said.

Aaron Pratt, 45, of Pinetop, was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County coroner's office. The second man left the scene, and as of Wednesday morning, he had not yet been identified, state police said.

Sweet was taken to Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital and then transferred to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. His wounds were not life-threatening, said Trooper Tony Watts of the Hazard post. The investigation is continuing.
