Business awards: Week of Jan. 7

■ Verizon Wireless's John Granby, president of the company's Kentucky/Indiana/Michigan region, has received the CareerFOCUS 2012 Eagle Award from the National Eagle Leadership Institute and CareerFOCUS Magazine. Granby was recognized for his commitment to a servant leadership style, in which he focuses on removing obstacles for his employees so nothing stands in their way of success. He was also honored for his commitment to the community. In particular, Granby was instrumental in making possible a $100,000 grant from Verizon to create the first endowed scholarship at the University of Kentucky for the Women's Empowerment Scholarship program. The Verizon Empowerment Scholarship is designed to help women get an education as a means of escaping violence and providing for their families.

Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Nicholasville-based Alltech, has been named Ireland's Business Person of the Year by Business and Finance magazine. A native of Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, Lyons was recognized at a Dec. 18 ceremony in Dublin.

Dr. Preston P. Nunnelley, chief medical officer at Central Baptist Hospital and former president of the Lexington Medical Society, has received the 2012 Jack Trevey Community Service Award, the Lexington Medical Society's top award for community service.
