Kentucky Children's Hospital has stopped doing pediatric cardiothoracic surgeries pending an internal review and is referring patients to other hospitals, according to a University of Kentucky spokesman.
Spokesman Jay Blanton would not provide any reasons for the review or specify why Dr. Mark Plunkett, UK's chief of cardiothoracic surgery, is no longer performing surgeries.
Blanton said Plunkett was performing other medical duties at UK HealthCare. Plunkett is paid $700,000 a year, according to UK records.
According to his UK biography, Plunkett is also director of UK's pediatric cardiac program and a co-director of UK's Gill Heart Institute. He has been at UK since 2007.
