State police were trying to figure out why a woman who was hit by a car and killed stepped into traffic in McCreary County Saturday.

Heather L. Canada, 23, walked onto U.S. 27 in the Whitley City about 9:47 p.m., police said in a news release. She walked into the path of a Toyota Camry driven by Seth Tucker, 18.

Canada was struck by Tucker's car and pronounced dead at the scene by McCreary County Coroner Dan Ridner, the release said.

No criminal charges were pending as of Sunday, said Tpr. Don Trosper, spokesman for the state police post investigating the case. Drugs and alcohol were not thought to be factors.

Canada and Tucker were both from Whitley City, police said.
