High school basketball highlights from Saturday, Jan. 19:
Bullitt East, Willis prevail in OT in Missouri tournament
University of Kentucky signee Derek Willis had 27 points, eight rebounds and made several clutch plays down the stretch to lead Bullitt East to a 59-55 victory over Hillcrest (Mo.) in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
Willis hit two free throws with 5 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 50 and force overtime. The Chargers trailed by 13 points early in the fourth quarter.
With Bullitt East ahead 55-54 in the final seconds of the extra period, Willis blocked a shot, grabbed the loose ball and was fouled. He made both free throws with 5 seconds left, and the Chargers held on for the victory. Willis was 7-for-7 from the line, 9-for-14 from the field and made two of three three-point attempts.
Bullitt East (16-4) won two of three games at the annual tournament in Springfield, Mo. Willis averaged 21.0 points and 8.3 rebounds during the event.
■ Montgomery County, ranked 17th in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State, pushed its lead to as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat No. 12 Covington Catholic 77-67 in the finals of the Toyota Classic at Georgetown. Omar Prewitt scored 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Indians. Bryan Wallace and Darius Jones added 16 and 14 points, respectively. Catholic's Brian Heppler hit five three-pointers to account for all 15 of his points.
■ No. 24 Lafayette outscored Collins by 11 in the third quarter and held on for an 84-77 victory against No. 22 Collins in the third-place game of the Toyota Classic. Jackson Davis led the Generals with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Charles Sweat-Washington had 19 points and six rebounds. Dez Marshall's double-double kept the Titans in it. He had 27 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
■ Trent Gilbert scored 24 points and Quin Richardson scored 13 of his 19 at the free-throw line in No. 9 Scott County's 75-56 victory against No. 18 Perry County Central in the fifth-place game of the Toyota Classic. Braxton Beverly and Justin Johnson both scored 20 points for the Commodores.
■ William Gary had 20 points in No. 11 Paul Laurence Dunbar's 74-58 victory against Christian County in the Al Prewitt Classic at Henry Clay. Mike Smith added 14 points and five steals.
■ Teddy Ware was 5-for-9 from three-point range and finished with a team-high 18 points in fifth-ranked Henry Clay's 72-46 victory against visiting Tates Creek in the Al Prewitt Classic.
■ Jack Whitman scored 24 points to go with 12 rebounds and four blocked shots and Lexington Catholic cruised to a 76-44 victory at Western Hills. Tom Banahan added 17 points and nine rebounds.
■ Anthony Gerald's 18 points and seven rebounds helped Model win 62-55 against Lexington Christian in the 11th Region All "A" Classic at Sayre. Tyler Harville had 23 points and six assists for the Eagles.
Girls' highlight:
■ Bryan Station edged visiting Tates Creek 59-58 in a game that had 12 lead changes. Serena Sandusky led the Defenders with 20 points, and DeShante Clay had 14 points and nine rebounds.
