January 22, 2013

University of Kentucky senior A'dia Mathies was among 20 players named Tuesday to the mid-season watch list for the John R. Wooden Player of the Year Award.

The list will be pared to 15 finalists later this season. The Wooden Award All-American Team, consisting of the top five players, will be announced the week of the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. The Wooden Award for the top player will be presented April 12.

Mathies made the top-15 list last season, when she also was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.

Baylor senior Brittney Griner heads the top-20 list. The 6-foot-8 Griner won the Wooden Award last season.

Mathies leads the Wildcats in scoring (15.4 points per game), three-point field goals made (43) and three-point percentage (.422), while ranking third in steals (1.6 per game), rebounds (4.3) and assists (2.1).

The 5-foot-9 guard has led the Wildcats (18-1, 6-0 SEC) into the top five of both national polls and has helped them win a nation-leading 17 straight games and a school-record 33 consecutive home games.

The Louisville native is also on the watch list for several other national awards, including the Wade Trophy, the Naismith Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award.
