Two Lexington banks were robbed Monday during a span of about four hours, police said.

The first incident occurred just after 9 a.m., when a bearded man entered a Central Bank branch on Tates Creek Centre Drive, handed a teller a note demanding money, then fled without actually receiving any cash, said police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.

The robber did not display a weapon or imply that he had one, according to Roberts.

City and University of Kentucky police later traced a suspect to a Kroger supermarket at nearby Tates Creek Centre. Inside the store, they arrested Duane K. Lee, 49, of Lexington and charged him with second-degree robbery, Roberts said.

The second incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. at a U.S. Bank branch on Richmond Road.

A man wearing a dark hoodie, toboggan and blue jeans entered the bank with a handgun drawn and demanded money, according to Roberts.

After bank employees complied, the robber fled on foot, Roberts said.

A search of the area by police, including a K-9 unit, was unsuccessful, she said.

No injuries were reported, and there was no indication the two incidents were related, Roberts said.

An investigation was continuing Monday afternoon.
