Lexington's Urban City Council unanimously approved a resolution Thursday asking the state General Assembly to reverse cuts made to the child care assistance program.

The Kentucky Department of Community Based Services will no longer accept new applicants starting in April, will end subsidies for relatives caring for children and will reduce the income bracket for applicants.

"This resolution is asking the Kentucky General Assembly to look at how this is impacting families," said Councilman George Myers.

Parents, child care providers and program participants spoke in support of the program. Issues with the cuts included losses of jobs and business for child care workers, the inability of single parents to afford child care, and the increased risk of more children entering the foster system with kinship subsidies.
