The Fru-Gal: Use Ibotta app to make money

Having a coupon is one way to save, but you can use the Ibotta smartphone app to earn money.

The app offers an array of products to browse before your head out on your shopping trip. Select the ones that interest you and watch a quick video, view recipes or similar marketing pitches.

Once you buy the products at participating stores, such as Wal-Mart, Target or CVS, you snap a photo of your receipt and scan the product’s barcode. Ibotta will then verify your purchase and add a credit to your account within a day.

Once you have earned at least $5, you can transfer your earnings directly to your PayPal account. You can also donate your money to your favorite school.

Valentine’s Day specials

Krispy Kreme sprinkled heart, valentine sprinkles and chocolate iced heart doughnuts are available now through Feb. 14 at participating Krispy Kreme locations.

When you purchase a dozen valentine doughnuts, you’ll receive a dozen valentine cards that are each good for a free doughnut of your choice.

■ Instead of candy, you can give out Frisch’s Valentine’s Day kids’ cards. They cost $1 for eight and are good for a kid’s meal, including drink, with no other purchase necessary.

Victoria’s Secret is holding an “Indulge Me Party” from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 10. The party will include chocolate tastings, express manicures and a chance to win prizes. Angel cardholders will also earn triple points on any purchases.

Free tax filings

People with simple tax returns can file them for free using H&R Block and TurboTax.

Freebies

Pizza Hut has noted on its Facebook page that once either quarterback in the Super Bowl says, “Hut,” that customers will receive one of the company’s “newest creations” for free from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday. No purchase is necessary, but it’s one per customer, dine-in or carryout.

SiriusXM satellite radio is being offered free through Feb. 12.

■ Text POINTS to 727272 to receive a code good for a free one-night game rental from Redbox. The offer is good through Feb. 13.

■ When you join the Aveda birthday program, you’ll receive a free personal blends, pure-fume spirit or body care product custom blended with the aroma of your choice. You can also get a free travel-size Aveda hand relief when you invite five friends to join the program.

Bob Evans is offering a coupon for a free breakfast entree when you buy a breakfast entree of equal or greater value and two drinks. The coupon is not valid on Sundays and expires Feb. 9.

Fru-Gal fact

A coupon is only valuable if it’s for something you need. If you wouldn't buy the product, take your coupon and place it on the shelf next to the item. I call this being a coupon angel.
