A Garrard County resident used a shotgun to shoot a man he suspected of burglarizing his house Monday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.

The resident came home and apparently realized someone was in his house, Trooper Paul Blanton said.

The resident, David Baker of Jennings Road in the Cartersville area, told police he yelled, ordering the intruder to come out of the house.

The intruder ran out the back door and toward his truck, Blanton said. The homeowner confronted the intruder and told him he was calling police.

The intruder allegedly "made some movement toward the homeowner which put him in fear for his life," Blanton said.

Baker fired one shot, hitting the intruder in his right shoulder, Blanton said. The intruder fled. The homeowner told police he did not see a weapon, but he felt threatened.

A short time later, a trooper found Jarred Pitman, 26, of Waco, sitting on a porch on Day Road, not far from Jennings Road, Blanton said. When the trooper stopped at the house, Pitman left the porch and lay down.

Charges against Pitman include three counts of burglary, one count of possession of burglary tools and one count of being a felon in possession of a handgun, Blanton said.

A handgun was allegedly found in Pitman's vehicle after he was arrested.

Pitman was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he remained Tuesday afternoon, Blanton said.
