A Lexington man accused of firing a gun Thursday at his recent estranged girlfriend from the window of an apartment near the University of Kentucky faces several charges.

Jessie James Boone Jr., 25, was charged with wanton endangerment, tampering with evidence, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana, Fayette County jail spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Taylor said.

The shooting was reported by someone at a nearby UK parking garage. Police were called about 8:20 a.m. after someone had fired into the street from the apartment at 333 South Limestone, police Lt. Mark Brand said.

The third-floor apartment is above Two Keys Tavern, a popular hangout for UK students and Lexington residents.

Brand said the couple had broken up, and as the girlfriend left, Boone fired the gun at least twice. The woman was not hurt, he said. Police did not release her name.

South Limestone, between Maxwell Street and Avenue of Champions, was closed for a short time. The street reopened just before 9 a.m.

About the same time, officers came out of the South Limestone building with Boone in handcuffs. One officer carried a plastic bag that contained a handgun.

Boone was booked into the Fayette County jail on an $8,300 bond, Taylor said. Boone declined media interviews from the jail, she said.
