Derby Dozen: A look at the next dozen

February 9, 2013

Here are the 3-year-olds who weren't sharp enough to make it into our Derby Dozen but who stand to make a strong run for the roses before all is said and done.

Owner: Repole Stable

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Bloodline: Bay colt by Dixie Union-Unacloud, by Unaccounted For

Career record: Five starts, 3-0-1, $344,381

The lowdown: Won a gutsy headbob over Normandy Invasion in the Grade II Remsen last November. Only thing that kept him out of the main dozen was the lousy history Remsen winners have had in the Derby the past decade, plus the ample number of other Pletcher contenders.

Owner: Willis D. Horton

Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas

Bloodline: Chestnut colt by Unbridled's Song-Take Charge Lady, by Dehere

Career record: Five starts, 2-1-0, $184,171

The lowdown: Half-brother to Grade I winner Take Charge Indy closed over a speed-favoring track to break his maiden at Keeneland and was game to win the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 21.

Owner: John Oxley

Trainer: Mark Casse

Bloodline: Dark bay colt by Sky Mesa-Murani, by Distorted Humor

Career record: Six starts, 2-2-1, $288,115.

The lowdown: Stakes winner was beaten a neck by Falling Sky in Grade III Sam F. Davis on Feb. 2 but was drifting out in the lane, suggesting there is still maturing to be done.

Owners: Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello and Joseph Bulger

Trainer: John Terranova

Bloodline: Bay colt by Lion Heart-Sea Dragoness, by Sea Hero

Career record: Four starts, 3-0-0, $164,800

The lowdown: Handled two turns for the first time by taking the Grade III Sam F. Davis in front-running style. Terranova said they thought the colt would be a "natural route horse."

Owner: John Oxley

Trainer: Mark Casse

Bloodline: Dark bay colt by Lion Heart-Captivating, by Arch.

Career record: Seven starts, 6-0-0, $510,837.

The lowdown: Owns two graded scores over the Churchill main track in the Grade III Iroquois and Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Suffered a hoof bruise that put him behind schedule and is now being pointed to either the Rushaway or Grade III Spiral Stakes at Turfway on March 23.

Owners: Mercedes Stables LLC

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Bloodline: Bay colt by Tiznow-Truly Blessed, by French Deputy

Career record: Three starts, 1-1-0, $45,150

The lowdown: Had fresh-out-of-retirement Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens thinking this could be his Derby mount after breaking his maiden by 73/4 lengths going a mile at Santa Anita on Feb. 2.

Owner: Reddam Racing

Trainer: Doug O'Neill

Bloodline: Gray or roan colt by Tapit-Amelia, by Dixieland Band

Career record: Six starts, 1-1-1, $472,000

The lowdown: Came within a head of winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile but was third in a field of four in the Grade II Robert B. Lewis on Feb. 2. Has frustrated O'Neill with his tendency to not apply himself in races or in the mornings.

Owner: Sherri Greenhill

Trainer: Jeffrey Greenhill

Bloodline: Bay colt by El Corredor-Marchmont, by Mountain Cat

Career record: Seven starts, 4-1-0 $114,840

The lowdown: Made it look easy when he stretched out to a mile, going gate to wire to take the 96Rock Stakes by 2 lengths at Turfway on Feb. 2.

Owners: WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stables

Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Bloodline: Bay colt by Dixie Union- Art Show, by Out of Place

Career record: Three starts, 1-1-1, $84,800

The lowdown: Broke his maiden second time out at Belmont last October and was right in the mix finishing third in the Grade II Remsen.

Owner: Tanma Corporation

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Bloodline: Chestnut colt by Pulpit-Exogenetic, by Unbridled's Song

Career record: Four starts, 2-1-0, $86,480

The lowdown: Runner-up in Grade III Hollywood Prevue Stakes last November was a 31/4-length allowance winner over stablemate Code West going a mile at Santa Anita on Jan. 31.

Owner: Westrock Stables

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Bloodline: Bay colt by Medaglia d'Oro-Sunshine Song, by War Chant

Career record: 10 starts, 2-5-1, $321,350.

The lowdown: Only times this Grade III winner was off the board came when he ran sixth in his debut at Hollywood Park last July and a fifth in the Grade I Frontrunner Stakes in September. Most recently second in Grade II Robert B. Lewis.

Owner: Claiborne Farm & Adele Dilschneider

Trainer: Al Stall Jr.

Bloodline: Bay colt, by War Front-Leave, by Pulpit

Career record: Two starts, 2-0-0, $48,000

The lowdown: Hasn't faced stakes company yet but won an allowance race going 1 mile, 70 yards by 41/2 lengths at Fair Grounds on Feb. 1.
