Whitaker, local bowling official since '79, resigns for health reasons

Special to the Herald-LeaderFebruary 9, 2013

Greater Lexington USBC Association Manager Julie Whitaker stepped down from her post on Jan. 31.

Whitaker, who has served local bowlers since 1979, resigned for health reasons. She served as president of the old Lexington Women's Bowling Association from 1990-2010. She accepted the post of association manager with the LWBA in 2010. Whitaker then became the first manager of the merged association, the Greater Lexington USBC.

She was inducted into the Greater Lexington USBC Hall of Fame in November.

The Greater Lexington USBC board named Harold Shields as the new association manager on Feb. 2.

Shields has served local bowlers for many years on the old men's board, the Lexington Area Bowling Association, and on the local USBC Youth Association board.

Shields joined the LABA board in the early 1970s and rose to serve as president during the 1992-93 season.

He was a longtime youth coach at Southland, coaching bantams, and has served as secretary of several large leagues.

Shields joined the old YABA board in the 1980s and became the association manager in 1995, a post he still holds.

Helen Gilkerson, the Greater Lexington USBC president, said she accepted Whitaker's resignation with a heavy heart.

"Julie has meant so much to bowling in Lexington for over 30 years, it just won't be the same without her at the meetings and tournaments," Gilkerson said. "(Shields) has some big shoes to fill."

The board had to fill the post quickly since the tournaments for both the men and women begin Saturday.
