Investigators say drugs were a factor in a shooting early Monday at an apartment complex on Versailles Road.

Police responded to the shooting about 4:05 a.m., and officers found a victim outside the Westminster Village Apartments at 1510 Versailles Road, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said. The man's injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The victim told investigators that two men forced their way into his apartment and "began shooting unprovoked." Roberts said police think the shooting stemmed from drugs.

"We have information that leads us to believe that this situation was a drug transaction or involved drugs in some way," she said.

Police found several people inside the apartment, but no one cooperated with investigators, Roberts said.

Among those in the apartment was the accused shooter, police said.

Jeffrey Cousey, 27, is charged with second-degree assault, tampering with evidence and five counts of wanton endangerment. He also was charged with two drug-trafficking charges and possession of synthetic marijuana.
