The Fru-Gal: Saving with daily deals and cash register coupons

It seems new daily deal sites pop up online every single day. They can offer you big savings, but you need to be mindful of what you’re buying.

Here are some tips on how you can avoid losing money on the offers:

■ Closely read the details of each deal. Most have expiration dates and restrictions on how they can be used. For instance, restaurant deals sometimes are only for food purchases and not alcohol.

It’s also common to hear of people having trouble scheduling appointments to redeem deals. If you do purchase one, make the appointment right away to ensure the offer won’t expire before you can redeem it.

■ Businesses benefit when people forget about the deal, so print out your purchase to remind yourself. Remember, too, that a daily deal is not a deal if you’re buying something you don’t need.

■ Beware of price inflation. The deals may tell you a suggested retail price instead of the actual price a retailer charges. You can always call and ask an establishment a product’s price before purchasing the deal.

That way, you’ll know if it’s really a deal.

Save with catalinas

One great way to save on your grocery bill is to use catalinas, which are the coupons that are printed at the cash register for you to use on your next shopping trip. Here are some catalinas being offered by Kroger:

■ Get a $1 catalina for buying a Campbell’s Go Soup product. Buy two and you’ll get a $1.50 catalina. Offer expires Feb. 23.

■ Buy Listerine Whitening Rinse and get a $2 catalina. Buy two and get a $4 catalina. Offer expires Feb. 24.

■ Buy two Milk-Bone dog snack products and get a $1 catalina. Buying three nets you a $2 catalina and four gets you a $3 catalina. Offer expires Feb. 24.

■ Buy two Crest, Glide, or Oral B Pro-Health products and get a $2 catalina. Offer expires March 7.

■ Buy six 5.5-ounce cans of Purina Mighty Dog dog food and get a $1 catalina. Offer expires March 2.

■ Buy two single-serving cups of Dole frozen fruit and get a 75-cent catalina. Buy three for a $1 catalina, or buy four for a $1.50 catalina. Offer expires Feb. 24.

■ Buy $10 of Aquaphor, Eucerin or Nivea products in a single transaction to receive a $3 catalina. Offer expires March 5.

■ Buy three 14.5-ounce cans of Del Monte tomatoes and get a $1 catalina. Get a $1.25 catalina when you buy four or a $2 catalina when you buy six. Offer expires Feb. 24.
