Freshman Nunley 5-0 after Kentucky softball's win against Washington

Published: February 15, 2013

Freshman Kelsey Nunley allowed one run on six hits in six innings and Lauren Cumbess hit a two-run homer in the first inning to lead Kentucky, ranked 24th in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' poll, to a 3-2 victory against No. 18 Washington on Friday in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego. The win for Cats (7-2) was their third against a ranked team this season.

After throwing a complete game shutout Friday night against host San Diego State, Nunley (5-0 with a team-low 1.62 ERA) pitched four scoreless innings before giving up a run in the fifth. Nunley was relieved by junior Ellen Weaver in the fifth inning before returning to the mound for a quiet seventh inning to clinch the victory.

Cumbess was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. She leads the team in batting average at .400 (12-for-30) with two doubles, two homers and eight RBI.

The Cats, also ranked 22nd in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, will play a doubleheader Saturday — against UC-Riverside at noon and Oklahoma at 4:30 p.m. The Sooners are No. 2 in the coaches' poll and first in the ESPN rankings.
