The LexGo Totally Awesome '80s Film Festival kicks off Wednesday with The Goonies (1985), about a group of kids going on an adventure to find a pirate's treasure.
Make plans to go to the screening, at 7:15 p.m. at The Kentucky Theatre. Admission is only $6.
Throughout the festival, which continues Wednesdays through March 27, there will be contests, giveaways and more.
You can read more about The Goonies and its place in pop culture on Sunday at LexGo.com and in print in the Living Sunday section.
But let's start thinking about the second movie in the festival: Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), screening March 6.
A Kentucky favorite, this much-lauded movie is the rags-to-riches biography of Loretta Lynn, who was born into poverty in Butcher Hollow, Ky., and went on to become one of the most successful and revered country music performers in history. Directed by Brit Michael Apted, it stars Sissy Spacek, above, as Lynn and Tommy Lee Jones as her husband, Doo. Spacek won the Oscar for best actress, and the movie was nominated for six others, including best picture.
We want to know:
What's your favorite Loretta Lynn song or lyric, and why?
Maybe it's this gem from the wonderfully named Fist City: "If you don't wanna go to Fist City, you'd better detour 'round my town/ 'Cause I'll grab you by the hair of the head, and I'll lift you off of the ground." Or perhaps it's Coal Miner's Daughter and this line: "We were poor but we had love/ That's the one thing that Daddy made sure of."
Tell us your favorites and why. Email it to sshive@herald-leader.com (subject line: "Loretta Lynn"); tweet us a direct message (@LexGoKy) or with the hashtag #totallyawesome80s; or post a comment on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/lexgo.
The deadline is noon Tuesday.
We'll publish our favorites next Friday in Weekender.
