Kentucky baseball: Cats lose lead in fifth, drop first game of season

Published: February 21, 2013

A five-run fifth inning Thursday spurred Kansas State to a 7-5 win over No. 8 Kentucky, handing UK (3-1) its first loss of the season during the Carravelle Resort Invitational at Coastal Carolina.

K-State (3-1) erased a three-run UK lead in the bottom of the fifth as seven consecutive hitters reached base.

Sophomore third baseman Max Kuhn led UK with a 3-for-4 day, with J.T. Riddle extending his hitting streak to seven games with a 1-for-4 game, adding a walk. Riddle has reached base safely in 17 of 23 trips to the plate.

Kentucky also got hits from A.J. Reed and Matt Reida, with Austin Cousino scoring a run and Lucas Witt contributing a sacrifice fly. Reed launched a towering homer to right field, his first of the year.

Reed (1-1) worked 41⁄3 innings in the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs. The 6-foot-4 lefty left after allowing three consecutive singles and a pair of runs. Three more runs came in as sophomore right-hander Chandler Shepherd allowed five hits.
