Two brothers from Somerset died Saturday morning when one accidentally shot his brother, then in grief turned the gun on himself.

Kyle Thacker and Kody Thacker had spent the night with friends at a home on Slate Branch Spur in the Slate Branch community of Pulaski County, according to a news release from the Pulaski County sheriff's office.

Kyle Thacker, 24, was asleep in a recliner in the living room and Kody Thacker, 19, was on a couch nearby. Kody Thacker picked up a 12-gauge shotgun, which accidentally went off and hit Kyle Thacker in the head, according to the release.

When Kody Thacker realized he had shot his brother, he became distraught and shot himself, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies were called at 9:47 a.m., and both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

"This incident appears to be a horrible family tragedy, and no foul play is suspected," the news release stated.

Lt. Detective Brett Whitaker said alcohol likely was involved. He said Lake Cumberland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
