Lucas Witt cleared the bases with a tie-breaking double in the top of the ninth inning, and the Kentucky baseball team rallied to beat Coastal Carolina 8-2 Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Kentucky (5-1) scored six runs in the ninth to break open a 2-2 game. J.T. Riddle and Paul McConkey added RBI singles in the inning.

"I just wanted to do something to help the team win," Witt said of his last at-bat. "I hadn't been great at the plate this weekend. I was trying to stay confident and stay true to my plan. ... I recognized the curveball and drove it. It felt good because I had been struggling a little bit."

Witt, a Lexington Christian graduate, went 1-for-5 but accounted for five of UK's eight runs and made two diving catches, including a tumble-over-the-fence grab in foul territory down the left-field line.

Riddle went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games, and Austin Cousino scored two runs.

"We are tough. We always believe we are going to win, no matter what inning," Witt said.

Kentucky's Corey Littrell got his first quality start of the season, allowing two runs in 61⁄3 innings. He walked five and struck out four.

"I liked the fact that Corey Littrell kept fighting even though he wasn't very efficient," UK Coach Gary Henderson said. "He kind of battled against himself early on and when it got tight he kept his poise, made the pitches when he needed to."

UK's Walter Wijas and Trevor Gott (2-0) combined for 22⁄3 innings of scoreless relief.

Kentucky had left eight runners on base entering the ninth inning. Matt Reida started the rally with a single through the right side, and Micheal Thomas was hit by a pitch when squaring to bunt.

Cousino greeted reliever Austin Kerr with a single to left to load the bases. After Coastal Carolina summoned closer Seth Lamando, Witt hit a two-strike double down the left-field line.

UK's home opener is Tuesday against Murray State at 4 p.m.
