UK assistant coach Orlando Antigua was in Richmond on Sunday to see Madison Central senior Dominique Hawkins.
The 6-foot-1 Hawkins, who is considered one of the best players in the state, has been receiving interest from several high-major programs.
Louisville, Alabama and Tennessee have all inquired about his recruitment in recent weeks. Purdue also called Sunday, according to Madison Central Coach Allen Feldhaus Jr.
Feldhaus said Antigua had been asking about Hawkins over the past few days, and the UK assistant said he might return to Richmond for Friday's region semifinal should Madison Central win its quarterfinal game Tuesday night.
"We had been texting back and forth and he was trying to find a time to come down here," Feldhaus told the Herald-Leader. "I think there's some interest. We'll see what happens."
Until recently, Hawkins had mainly been considering Morehead State and Western Kentucky, passing on other mid-major offers in favor of the two homestate schools with which he was already comfortable.
"Those are the two that have been in all along and have watched him constantly," Feldhaus said. "They're begging to get him.
"I think he's probably No. 1 on (Morehead's) list and I know he's No. 1 on Western's list too. Those guys — they're hoping other people don't see him. Because I think they realize he could probably play at a bigger level."
Hawkins was also a star player on the Madison Central football team, and he has been projected as a talented college football prospect should he choose to go that route. Feldhaus said that wouldn't happen.
"No, no. He's a basketball player helping our football team," he said.
Madison Central opens the 11th Region tournament against Franklin County at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The Indians will be heavily favored in that game and would next face either Paul Dunbar or Henry Clay at 8:15 p.m. Friday.
The tournament will be played at Eastern Kentucky's McBrayer Arena.
Madison Central is the No. 3-ranked team in the state and the top-rated team in the 11th Region.
