A Fayette County grand jury indicted a woman who was found wandering in Lexington with a toddler whose mother had reported her missing.
Maria Baltierra-DeJesus was indicted Monday on one count of custodial interference. The charge stems from an investigation launched by University of Kentucky police.
Two officers spotted Baltierra-DeJesus pushing the child in a stroller on campus Dec. 28.
Baltierra-DeJesus was acting strangely and the child, her granddaughter, was not dressed appropriately for the cold temperatures that day, police have said. Police later learned the child's mother reported her missing about two months earlier from Los Angeles, Calif.
Baltierra-DeJesus remained lodged in the Fayette County jail Tuesday. She is fighting extradition to Los Angeles, where she had an outstanding warrant for allegedly taking the child from her daughter without permission.
