Fayette County: Luncheon at YMCA celebrates cancer survivors

The Cincinnati Klezmer Project will perform at an evening of traditional Jewish and Israeli folk music at Temple Adath Israel on Sunday evening.

The North Lexington Family YMCA will host a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA benefit luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. March 7. The luncheon will celebrate the cancer survivors who have participated since the program's inception in 2011.

The event will also include a silent auction, with proceeds benefitting the North Lexington Family YMCA's annual giving campaign, which supports the Open Doors financial assistance program, which ensures that no one is turned away from Y membership or programs due to an inability to pay.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at any YMCA of Central Kentucky location or at ymcaofcentralky.org/register-programs.

Conference for grandparents raising children

The 11th Annual Bluegrass Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference is 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 21 at the Clarion Hotel, 1950 Newtown Pike. The conference is for grandparents/relatives and professionals and includes a variety of workshops on legal, financial, mental health and parenting topics.

The registration fee, including lunch, is $5 for grandparents/relatives and $50 for professionals and includes CEUs for social work and CLEs for law. Contact the Fayette Extension Office, at (859) 257-5582 or Fayetteextension.com.

Deadline today to nominate a hero

Nominations are due today for the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department Public Health Heroes Award. The award is for individuals who have demonstrated a dedication to improving the health of Lexington residents.

Criteria for the selection of the Public Health Heroes Award include exemplary leadership and diligence in promoting public health; remarkable contributions and support in fostering public health programs; and work or actions that have affected the community's health in a positive way and would not have occurred without the activities of the nominee.

To nominate someone, provide the following information: name, professional title and organization; phone number and email address of nominee; and examples of why the person is award-worthy. Descriptions of no more than 200 words can be submitted to Kevin Hall via email at KevinS.Hall@ky.gov or by fax at (859) 288-2359. Nominations are due by 4 p.m. today. Y to host 3-on-3 basketball tourney

The North Lexington Family YMCA will hold a 3-on-3 basketball tournament March 16.

The double-elimination tournament will consist of three divisions: competitive, recreational and women. Teams can have a maximum of four players and the tournament is for adults ages 18 and over.

Cost is $30 per team with all proceeds benefitting the Y's annual giving campaign. Teams must register by March 8 at the North Lexington Family YMCA, 381 West Loudon Avenue, or by calling Cody Swords or Tyler Martin at (859) 258-9622 or by email at cswords@ymcaofcentralky.org or northsports@ymcaofcentralky.org.

An evening of klezmer music

An evening of traditional Jewish and Israeli folk music, including classic klezmer melodies of the renowned musical group the Cincinnati Klezmer Project, will be from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Temple Adath Israel, 124 North Ashland Ave. Tickets are $9. Call Temple Adath Israel at (859) 269-2979.
