Points leader Ive Struck a Nerve injured, off Derby trail

March 9, 2013

NEW ORLEANS — Ive Struck a Nerve, the 135-1 upset winner of the Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 23, injured an ankle during a workout at Fair Grounds on Saturday morning and will miss both the Louisiana Derby and the Kentucky Derby.

Ive Struck a Nerve posted a half-mile breeze in 482⁄5 seconds with jockey James Graham aboard but showed signs of discomfort shortly after returning to trainer Keith Desormeaux's barn.

"We X-rayed it and it looks like he's got a fracture of a sesamoid," Desormeaux said. "Not shattered. It is a serious injury but the prognosis is very favorable for a return to racing. But it's going to be awhile, maybe six months."

Ive Struck a Nerve entered Saturday as the Kentucky Derby points leader.

Fort Larned drops jockey in season debut

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned stumbled and dumped his jockey coming out of the starting gate, then led the field to the finish line in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap won by Discreet Dancer.

Brian Hernandez Jr. wasn't hurt in the mishap involving Fort Larned, who was making his season debut. The 5-year-old star picked himself up and completed the race riderless.

Discreet Dancer avoided trouble with an alert break from the starting gate just to the inside of Fort Larned. He won by 5¼ lengths as the 9-5 favorite ridden by Javier Castellano and trained by Todd Pletcher. Discreet Dancer ran the mile in 1:35.17.
