A Letcher County man was charged Thursday with wanton endangerment after his wife died when she jumped on the trunk of his car following an argument and fell off, according to an arrest document.
Roger R. Elswick, 37, of Mayking was at the Letcher Detention Center on Friday morning, but bond had not been set, Letcher Deputy Jailer Carroll Pease said.
At 3 a.m. Thursday, according to a police uniform citation, Elswick and his wife, Connie Elswick, 35, were involved in a verbal and physical argument. Elswick got into his vehicle to leave their home. He told police that his wife jumped onto the trunk of the vehicle. He traveled down Cram Creek Road in Letcher County with his wife on the trunk.
"Mr. Elswick stated he pulled into a parking lot after he thought his wife had jumped off the car," the citation said.
The citation said Connie Elswick was found dead on Cram Creek Road of an apparent head injury.
An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker said.
Kentucky State Police are investigating, Trooper Tony Watts said.
