The Kroger store on Leestown Road was evacuated for about 1 1/2 hours early Monday because of a Freon leak, Lexington Fire Department spokesman Joe Best said.

About 3:15 a.m., a worker was moving items and struck a refrigerant pipe carrying Freon, Best said.

Freon can displace oxygen and cause suffocation, he said.

No one was injured, and workers returned to the store by 4:45 a.m after firefighters ventilated the store, Best said.
