Henry Clay High School graduate Victor Moses, who helped lead Georgetown College to the NAIA Division I basketball championship on Tuesday night, was named National Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Georgetown's second-year coach, Chris Briggs, was named National Coach of the Year for NAIA Division I.
The player of the year honor was first awarded in 1994, and Moses is the first Tiger to win it. The forward from Lexington led the NAIA in field-goal percentage (.669) and was third in rebounding (9.7), 30th in blocks per game (1.16) and 31st in scoring (17.1). During Georgetown's five-game run to the championship in Kansas City, Mo., Moses averaged 17.0 points and 13.6 rebounds while shooting 56 percent.
Georgetown defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University of Texas 88-62 in Tuesday night's championship game.
Briggs, who took over for longtime coach Happy Osborne last year, led the Tigers to their second national championship in school history and first since 1998. Georgetown finished 28-8 this season, bringing Briggs' two-year record to 54-17.
Briggs is the third coach of the year from Georgetown since the awards program started in 1954, joining Bob Davis (1959) and Jim Reid (1994 and 1996).
Five other players from Kentucky schools received NAIA All-America honors Wednesday.
Pikeville senior guard Jamar Briscoe joined Moses on the NAIA All-America first team.
Lindsey Wilson senior guard Kalen Kimberland and Pikeville senior forward Trevor Setty were named to the second team.
Junior forward Vernon Payne of Campbellsville and senior guard Antonio Bumpus of Cumberlands received honorable mention.
■ Senior forward Ashley Rainey of Lindsey Wilson was the only woman from a Kentucky school named an NAIA first-team All-American.
Georgetown junior guard Kourtney Tyra and St. Catharine senior forward Janae Howard were named second-team All-Americans.
Campbellsville senior guard Courtney Clifton and St. Catharine senior forward Reilly Poirier made the third team.
Mackenzie Lee of Campbellsville, Dace Bicane of Cumberlands and Stephanie Malone of Mid-Continent received honorable mention.
