An internal investigation led to felony charges against a Franklin County Regional Jail officer accused of bringing contraband into the facility and illegally using another person's food stamps.

The Franklin County grand jury on Wednesday indicted former Frankfort corrections officer Christopher D. Blankenship and his wife, Shanda Blankenship.

Christopher Blankenship was charged with official misconduct, promoting contraband and making false statements to receive benefits over $100. His wife was charged with possession of a forged instrument and making false statements to receive benefits.

A statement released by the jail said the charges were the result of an internal investigation of the officer which began "months ago."

"As a result of evidence and information received, the case was presented to the Franklin County Grand Jury and an indictment was returned on numerous felony counts on both subjects," the statement said.
