A man shot Saturday night during an attempted armed robbery at West Second and Jefferson streets was pronounced dead a short time later at University of Kentucky Hospital by emergency room personnel, according to Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn.

The name of the 57-year-old man was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Ginn said Sunday. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

Lexington police said the man who was shot approached another man sitting in a car and tried to rob him. The man in the car pulled out a gun and shot the would-be robber, police said.

No charges have been filed. The shooting remains under investigation.
