The Day At the races

Keeneland: The Day at the Races

April 8, 2013

Sunday's figures: On-track attendance, 11,038; on-track betting, $724,939.90; total betting including simulcast, $8,434,945.02.

This day last year: No comparable figures because last year was Easter Sunday.

Coming up: Live racing resumes with an eight-race card on Wednesday. There are no stakes races until the Grade I Maker's 46 Mile on Friday, a race that is expected to feature reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan in his seasonal debut as well as defending race winner, Data Link.

Final furlong

■ Sunday's crowd brought the attendance for the three-day opening weekend to a record 66,523, breaking the 2011 mark of 62,257.

■ Noble Tune, a candidate for Saturday's Grade I Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, worked five furlongs in 1:01.20 in company with Big Blue Kitten at Keeneland on Sunday. Dropping out of Blue Grass consideration was Falling Sky, who will instead point for the Grade I Arkansas Derby the same day.

■ Jockey Leandro Goncalves was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center Sunday after being thrown from his mount Xmas Sky at the start of the day's first race. Goncalves was awake and alert, according to Keeneland medical director Dr. Barry Schumer, and was able to move his extremities. He was complaining of pain in his hip and pelvic regions and was scheduled to have X-rays.

■ Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Emotional Kitten caught Adriani right at the wire to win the day's feature race, a $60,000, 11⁄16-mile allowance race on the turf. Joel Rosario, who was aboard Emotional Kitten, won four races on the card, including the nightcap.
