Lexington students start annual contest to log miles of walking

April 8, 2013

Students at Lexington Traditional Magnet School and other Fayette County schools kicked off World Fit Walk competition Monday. Lexington schools have dominated the contest in previous years, including 2012 when nine schools were in the top 12 for miles per student per day.

Former Olympian LaVonna Martin Floreal spoke at LTMS and 1984 Olympian Sharrieffa Barksdale spoke at Winburn Middle to help motivate students to walk or get the most minutes of activities.

According to its website, World Fit Walk is the "heart of the World Fit program." On the Monday following sprint break, students are encouraged to participate for six weeks and log their miles online.
