Lex-Care: Heart trouble puts couple in arrears on electric bill

April 10, 2013

Shannon Gordon, a social worker at the Senior Citizen Center, is counseling a married couple who are taking care of their two grandchildren, ages 13 and 10. They need $401.53 to pay their electric bill.

The husband was diagnosed with congenital heart condition some time ago, which was medically stabilized and he continued working. Recently the condition worsened. He was hospitalized and finally had to stop working. As a result they have depleted their savings.

He has applied for Social Security Disability benefits which have been approved. Once the benefits are in place and the bill is cleared, the family will be able to manage.
