Army band cancels appearance at Danville brass band festival

April 19, 2013

Budget cuts in the U.S. Department of Defense will affect Danville's Great American Brass Band Festival. Festival director Niki Kinkade announced Friday that the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus will not appear at the June 7-9 festival due to the budgetary effects of the recent sequestration process.

The Under Secretary of Defense has directed that military bands and other ceremonial units stop all travel for the spring and summer of 2013, Kinkade said in a release. As a result, the Army band has canceled all upcoming performances.

The festival has adjusted its schedule for a June 8 picnic and the grand finale on June 9.

"We are fortunate that we have such outstanding musicians and groups coming that we have been able to ask several key performers to stand in the gaps," Kinkade said in the release. "Audiences can be assured that the GABBF will continue to provide quality, highly-entertaining programming, despite this very unfortunate cancellation."
