Parenthood brings lots of joy and lots of responsibility. The more planning and preparation, the easier the transition once your precious bundle of joy arrives.
If you're a first-time mom-to-be, you're dealing with hormonal changes while seeking answers to questions such as:
How will I know if I'm really in labor?
Will I breast-feed?
What happens if my baby has colic?
How do I choose a pediatrician?
Who will be in the delivery room with me?
Even if this is your second or sixth child, you still have questions because each pregnancy is unique, as is each baby.
Many questions can be answered by participating in childbirth and parenting classes offered by the hospital where you are planning to give birth.
Baptist Health Lexington offers a variety of such classes — many of them free — where you can get an overview of having a baby; learn specifics about breathing and relaxation methods during labor and delivery; and find out the basics of infant care, from holding, diapering and bathing your baby. There are classes specifically about prenatal exercise, pediatric CPR, preparing youngsters for becoming a big brother or sister, and feeding your child.
Baptist Health Lexington's Expecting Great Things maternity event also is designed to answer questions about giving birth and caring for your baby. This free event on Saturday at Keeneland Entertainment Center will give prospective parents a chance to meet and ask questions of obstetricians and pediatricians, learn about car-seat safety, get information about breast-feeding and see some of the latest products available. There will be food, prizes and fun.
Dan Zevin, author of Dad Gets a Minivan: Life at the Intersection of Dude and Dad, will present a humorous glimpse into how fatherhood has changed his life. Dads-to-be may take part in a diapering contest.
You might even be lucky enough to go home with one of the grand prizes, including a dream nursery from Nursery Time Baby and Kids Furniture Gallery or a Big Green Egg grill from Housewarmings.
