According to Lexington police documents, the man who was shot in the chest Monday night on Winchester Road was Shomari Gerald Moore, 27.

WKYT-TV reported that the victim is a former University of Kentucky football player. UK Athletics spokesman Tony Neely said he could not confirm that Moore had been shot.

Lexington police Lt. Mark Brand would not confirm the identity of the man who told police he had been driving near Elkhorn and Winchester roads when two men on foot flagged him down.

Police said Monday that when the victim rolled down his window, one of the men shot him in the chest and the two men ran away. The victim drove down Winchester Road and pulled up to an officer at Owens Street at 9:37 p.m.

The victim was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition late Monday night, Brand said Tuesday morning. Brand said he had no new information about the case as of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

UK Hospital spokeswoman Julie Phillips said Tuesday morning that Moore's name was not listed in hospital records.

Neely said Moore was a member of the football team from 2004 to 2008. He red-shirted in 2004, then was a four-year letterman in the 2005-08 seasons. He played defensive back, Neely said.

Shomari also was a graduate manager for men's basketball during the 2011-12 season, Neely said.
