A home on Cantrill Drive in Lexington was heavily damaged by an explosion and fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 1500 block of Cantrill at about 7:55 p.m., after the homeowners reported a loud explosion and subsequent fire, fire department Battalion Chief Brian Wainscott said.

He said firefighters approaching Cantrill Drive, which runs off Eastland Parkway, could see thick smoke from New Circle Road.

When they arrived, Wainscott said, there was "a lot of heavy fire in the back of the structure."

Firefighters were on the scene within three minutes of the fire being reported, Wainscott said, but the home sustained severe damage.

"The guys did a good job, but the fire had a head start on us," he said.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire and explosion were unknown Tuesday night.
