Coupons are just the first step in saving money.

To get the most value out of them, you should use them when the advertised products are on sale. This will give you double savings.

Stores such as Target, Meijer, Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens also allow you to use an in-store coupon along with a manufacturer's coupon. If you match both with a sale, you're getting triple the savings.

Learning these simple couponing skills can save you a significant amount of money throughout the year.

Here are a number of ways you can start saving this week:

Kroger

■ Select varieties of Kellogg's cereals are on sale for $2.99. Use the $1 newspaper coupon when you buy three.

■ Eggo frozen waffles are on sale for four for $9. Use the 75-cent coupon when you buy any two.

■ The grocery is running a promotion in which you save $4 instantly when you buy any four of a selection of products. The prices below include the $1 savings per item. Products include:

■ Clairol Nice 'n Easy for $6. Use the $2 newspaper coupon.

■ Gillette disposables for $5.99. Use the $2 newspaper coupon.

■ Old Spice body wash for $2.79. Use the $1 newspaper coupon when you buy two.

■ 50-ounce packages of Tide for $4.99. Use any of the coupons ranging from 40 cents to $3 depending on how many you buy.

Meijer

■ Colgate toothpaste is on sale for $2. Use the 50-cent newspaper coupon, which will be doubled.

■ Packs of Nestlé drumstick cones are on sale for two for $5. Use the 75-cent coupon to save more.

■ Three packages of Uncle Ben's Ready Rice are on sale for $5. Use the $1 newspaper coupon to save more.

■ The grocery is running a promotion in which you can receive a $10 prepaid card by mail when you buy $30 or more of P&G products. The information will be printed out on a custom coupon at the cash register. All of the following products are P&G products:

■ Crest toothpaste is on sale for two for $6. Use the $1 newspaper coupon to save more.

■ Pantene shampoo and conditioner is on sale for two for $7. Use the $3 newspaper coupon.

■ Select Febreze products are on sale for two for $9. Use the various newspaper coupons to save more.

■ Bounty big roll six-packs are two for $11. Use the 25-cent coupon, which will be doubled.

■ Charmin double-roll packs are two for $11. Use the 25-cent coupon, which will be doubled.

■ All shades of Vidal Sassoon hair color are $1 off. Use the $3 newspaper coupon to save more.

CVS

■ The Oral-B Pulsar is on sale for $5.99. Use the $1 newspaper coupon, plus receive $3 in ExtraCare bucks, which can be used toward future purchases.

■ Crest toothpaste is on sale for $3.49. Use the $1 newspaper coupon, plus get $1 in ExtraCare bucks.

■ When you spend $30 on Pantene Expert products, you'll get $10 in ExtraCare bucks. Use the $3 newspaper coupon to save more.

■ Olay Regenerist Premium costs $22.99. Use the $3 newspaper coupon, plus get $2 in ExtraCare bucks. There's also a $10 mail-in rebate available when you spend $30 on participating Olay products. Learn more at CVS.com.

■ Buy one CoverGirl eye or lip product and get a second for half off. Use the $2 newspaper coupon to save even more.

■ Hershey's or Mars Chocolate single candy bars cost 99 cents. When you scan your ExtraCare card at the red kiosk in stores, you'll get a 99-cent instant coupon for a candy bar.

Rite Aid

■ Buy $30 of Procter & Gamble products, and get $10 in +UPs Rewards, which are good toward future purchases. Use the $2 Pantene coupon, $1 Old Spice coupon, and buy-one-get-one-free coupon for Venus & Olay razors to make this a great deal.

■ Receive $10 off when you buy any Crest 3D Whitestrips kit. Also use the $7 newspaper coupon, plus get $5 in +UPs Rewards.

■ Buy $20 of select Gillette products, and receive $5 in +UPs Rewards. Use the newspaper coupon that offers $5 off one Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor when you buy one Gillette Fusion cartridge (4-count or larger).

■ Clairol Nice 'n Easy Hair Color is on sale for $7.99. Use the $2 newspaper coupon and the $2 coupon in the Rite Aid circular.

■ A pack of Schick disposable razors is on sale for $5.99. Use the buy-one-get-one-free newspaper coupon.

Walgreens

■ Colgate Dental Care costs $2.49. Use the 50-cent newspaper coupon, plus get $1 in Register Rewards, which can be used toward future purchases.

■ Tampax Pearl liners are on sale for $3.99. Use the $1 newspaper coupon, plus receive $1 in Register Rewards.

■ Scope mouthwash is on sale for $2.99. Use the $1 newspaper coupon, plus get $1 in Register Rewards.
