Name of Scott County deputy involved in fatal shooting to be released this week

Scott County Sheriff Tony Hampton said Sunday that the name of the deputy involved in a fatal shooting won't be released until Monday or later. Ronald M. Davis, 31, of Berea was killed Saturday after he apparently shot a woman in Lexington, led police on a two-county chase along Interstate 75 and pulled a handgun on officers.

Hampton, who said he thought the shooting was justified, said he would meet Monday with Kentucky State Police, which is investigating the shooting.

Hampton said Sunday that the deputy who fired the fatal shot had been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice after a shooting. Once the investigation is completed, he said, the deputy would be involved in the decision when to return to duty.

During his 20 years in law enforcement in Scott County, Hampton said, he couldn't remember a fatal shooting involving a local law enforcement officer.

No updates were available Sunday from state police about the woman injured in the initial confrontation; her name has not been released. She was listed in serious condition Saturday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
