Woman killed in Lewis County when pickup hits tree, overturns

May 5, 2013

A Fleming County woman died Saturday in a one-vehicle crash in Lewis County, Kentucky State Police said.

Rita Roberts, 42, of Flemingsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Lewis County deputy coroner, state police said in a news release.

Roberts was a passenger in a 1998 black Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Gary Barton, 51, of Flemingsburg.

The pickup was southbound on Ky. 57 when it left the northbound shoulder of the road and struck a tree with the passenger side of the vehicle. The pickup partially overturned and came to rest on the driver's side over an embankment.

Barton was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., where he was listed in stable condition. Neither Barton nor Roberts were wearing seat belts, police said.

The crash was reported at 7:44 p.m. Saturday.
