U.S. Rep. Andy Barr and his wife, Carol Barr, had their second child last week — another daughter.

Barr, R-Lexington, announced the arrival of Mary Clay Barr on Sunday in his electronic newsletter.

"It has been an exciting week for our family!" wrote Barr, who took office in January. "On Monday, Carol, Eleanor and I were blessed to welcome Mary Clay to our family. She is a beautiful gift from God and we could not be happier or more thankful for her health."

The Barrs' first child, Eleanor, is 2.

The congressman said Mary Clay was born at 1:26 p.m. April 29 and weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces.

In the newsletter, Barr tied the birth of his second daughter to a political issue, pledging to "rein in Washington's reckless spending."

"My top priority as your representative in Congress is to reduce our rapidly growing national debt that is choking our economy and which, if left unchecked, will cripple the futures of our children and grandchildren," Barr said.

He added: "According to the Congressional Budget Office and the Census Bureau's long-term estimates, the amount of debt placed on the backs of children like Mary Clay and Eleanor is about to explode."
