Paul Mullins will be the new superintendent of Garrard County Public Schools.

Mullins' appointment was announced Thursday by the Garrard County Board of Education. He is principal at LaRue County High School in Hodgenville.

Mullins succeeds superintendent Donald Aldridge, who announced in January that he would retire at the end of the school year. Aldridge led the Garrard Schools for four years.

There were 39 applicants for the Garrard post. A screening committee narrowed the list to 10, and recommended six people from that list to be interviewed by the school board.

"The letter and intent of the law were followed every step along the way," Garrard board chairman Joe Brown said. "Everything was done very professionally and transparently."

Mullins will take over July 1.
